Whether it’s a contract issue, a construction claim, or franchise litigation—when legal issues arise in your business, how you show up in court isn’t just about what’s being argued, it’s about the image you portray. In legal settings, optics matter.
If you’re preparing to appear in court—especially for the first time—it’s important to understand what’s expected of you. Not just legally, but professionally. At LPJ Legal, we help clients throughout Georgia, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia navigate high-stakes legal matters with knowledge, strategy, and confidence. Whether you’re a contractor defending your reputation, a franchise owner protecting your investment, or a startup founder asserting your rights, here’s how we coach our clients to carry themselves in a courtroom setting with confidence and credibility.
✅ Before You Arrive:
- Know your courtroom assignment: Check your notice or call ahead to confirm the exact courtroom and time. Don’t figure it out the day of—Courthouses are notoriously confusing, especially in large jurisdictions like D.C. or Fairfax County, VA.
- Dress like you respect the process: Business formal attire is recommended, business casual at a minimum. For men, a collared shirt and dress pants are standard. For women, dress modestly and professionally. Avoid flashy accessories, heavy fragrances, or distracting hairstyles.
- Bring your paperwork: Always bring a physical copy of any documents you or your attorney might reference—contracts, notices, emails, licenses, etc. This includes your photo ID.
- Be early: Aim to arrive 30–45 minutes early to allow time for security lines, last-minute prep, or restroom breaks. Running late—even if traffic or parking is to blame—will reflect poorly on you.
👣 When You Arrive:
- Turn off your phone (not just silent—off).
- Speak softly in public areas and avoid side conversations. Courthouse hallways echo, and judges take note of disruptive behavior.
- Find your seat and wait quietly. If your attorney hasn’t arrived, don’t wander around or try to ask the court staff for legal advice—they can’t give it.
🙏 Inside the Courtroom:
- Stand when the judge enters and leaves. This is non-negotiable and sets the tone.
- Address the judge respectfully: “Your Honor” is the correct address.
- Don’t interrupt—even if you disagree with something being said.
- Speak clearly and only when spoken to, unless instructed otherwise by your attorney.
- Mind your body language: Sit upright, make eye contact, and keep facial expressions neutral—even if the other side says something outrageous.
- Everyone in the room matters: From the bailiff, to the court clerk, to opposing counsel, treat everyone in the room with courtesy. The legal community is smaller than you think, and reputations travel quickly. Not to mention, a respectful, professional demeanor builds your credibility in and out of court.
If you need to communicate something with your attorney during proceedings, jot it down or ask for a break.
✍️ If You’re Called to Speak:
- Listen to the full question before answering.
- Answer honestly, calmly, and directly.
- Avoid legal jargon unless you’re sure of its meaning—remember, you hired your attorney to take care of the legal strategy, your job is to be professional, honest and respectful.
👋 When You Leave:
- Stand again as the judge exits.
- Don’t celebrate or show emotion in the courtroom—even if things go your way.
- Wait to debrief with your attorney outside the courtroom or in a private hallway. You’re still being observed, and professionalism doesn’t stop at the bench.
